[TDV]   Tozeur Density Variations

[DB] Database

The oasis city of Tozeur was mapped as a test bed in order to investigate the existence of life in the Chott El Djerid area. As every civilization in history of time used to settle around water infrastructure, in case of Tozeur 2000 natural springs where the main cause of the first settlements in the middle of the Tunisian desert.  These natural source of water, led to the creation of one the biggest oasis of Southern Tunisia and the development of the Tozeur oasis city. Unfortunately, few decades ago, the depletion of most natural springs constrained the farmers to dig deep in the ground to find water resulting more and more to the decay of the old oasis.

[ALG] Algorithm

Voronoi algorithm techniques where used in order to illustrate the urban density as well as the occupying area of each agriculture plot. A circle intensity diagram(datascape image) illustrates the agriculture density. Proximity algorithms where used in order to illustrate the salt crust concentrated around the existing water ponds

[MP] Maps

By mapping the occupying system of each building in the city of Tozeur, it is clearly observed the differentiation of the city's density. Through this variation, the city can be divided into three zones, the old Medina, the main city and the 'touristic zone'. It is clearly observed that the city of Tozeur is shifting away from the oasis towards the south-west, where new artificial plantations (golf areas) are emerging close to the tourist zone. This observation can be also pointed out in the agricultural area of the oasis. Moving forward in the operational filed drawing we can see the network of the water extraction from the wells in the oasis area, compared to the potential network of bacteria and algae cultivation inside the salt lake. At the same time the drawing illustrates a comparison between the water plots that emerge naturally in the salt lake and the points where the water is being extracted artificially by human.
