Sidi Bouzid is characterized by the existence of strong, interwoven social network. Many of the market farmers still adopt the family-based, subsistence mode of production. The rising food prices place these production units in crisis as for many, the food they grow is no longer adequate for them to purchase their main staple - wheat. Perhaps the tensions and difficulty in the food production network can be exemplified in the frequency of revolts and unrest which has set forth the Arab Spring.
